Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0 Oracle Solaris Cluster software has a validation tool called OSCATE (Oracle Solaris Cluster Automated Test Environment) that is used to verify that the storage under test meets all the requirements for successful integration with Oracle Solaris Cluster. This means that Oracle Solaris Cluster can be safely used with different storage technologies such as FC, SCSI, iSCSI and NAS on Oracle storage and third party storage. Oracle's third party storage partners are diligently working towards certification with Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0 and Oracle Solaris 11 software. Partners now certified are EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, HP/3PAR, IBM and NEC.

In a procedure replete with code samples and screen shots, Laura Hartman outlines the steps necessary to create and configure an Oracle Solaris 11 non-global zone from the Plan Management View of Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c. The zones created with this procedure will have these characteristics, Hartman writes:
SAN storage is used for the zone and NAS storage is used for the zone metadata.
The zone is installed from the Oracle Solaris 11 Software Update library.
Hartman advises that the zone is available for use as a separate operating system.

Java Champion Johan Vos joins host Roger Brinkley on Java Spotlight Episode 96 for a discussion of "GlassFish and JavaFX. Brinkley explains that, because he can't make a choice between embedded development and enterprise development, Vos focuses principally on end-to-end Java, combining the strengths of back-end systems and embedded devices. His favorite technologies are currently Java EE / Glassfish at the backend and JavaFX at the front-end. Vos is a member of the BeJUG steering group, the Devoxx steering group, and he is a JCP member, as well as the co-author of the Pro JavaFX 2 book.

In a post on Application Development Trends John K. Waters cities the opinion of IDC analyst Al Hilwa in the report "Java: Two and a Half Years After the Acquisition," in answer to the question of how Java is doing under Oracle. In the recent corporate behavior of VMware and even Microsoft, Jay Lyman, writing in LinuxInsider, finds a more accepting stance toward free and open source software in the proprietary community. These proprietary stalwarts, and others, says Lyman," ... talk bullishly about their integration with, contribution to, and support for open source software, which is a far cry from belittling open source as a hobby or demonizing it as not enterprise-ready." For all of that, he concludes, there remains a marked difference between VMware, for example, and Red Hat, which has been, and remains, solely open source from the start.
